Bergey Wind Water Pumping Systems
Wind-Electric Pumping Systems |
Bergey wind turbines produce three-phase alternating current (AC) that varies in voltage and frequency with wind speed. Technology developed by USDA and BWC allows the variable 3-phase AC from the turbine to drive standard 220 or 240 VAC 3-phase induction motors directly. Although these motors normally operate at near constant speed off the 50 or 60 hertz (Hz) electric grid, the BWC wind-electric pumping technology allows them to operate over a frequency range of 30 to 90 Hz. The system works like a conventional variable-speed drive, except instead of an inverter the variable voltage and frequency are provided directly by the turbines permanent magnet alternator. The power requirements for standard centrifugal pumps are well matched to the output of BWC wind turbines. This allows a properly sized pump and motor to operate very efficiently over a wide range of wind speeds. Volumetric pumps, such as jack pumps, are more of a challenge, but can also operated effectively. There are several advantages to the wind-electric pumping systems: 1) The wind turbine can be placed at some distance from the well (borehole) or other water source, 2) Unlike mechanical windmills, these systems require no scheduled maintenance, and 3) These systems are capable of pumping the higher water volumes necessary for community water supply and small-plot irrigation. Wind-electric pumping systems are much less costly to install than solar pumping systems and they are much less costly to operate than diesel pump systems. Although standard, off-the-shelf, motors and pumps are used, the manner in which the pumps are chosen is different form that of grid powered systems. List price includes a wide selection of matched Grundfos submersible pumps that can be selected using the site's pumping lift (total dynamic head). |
