Grid Connected Sunny Boy DC/AC power inverter

The extremely low specific price makes the Sunny Boy 2500 SMA's best bargain. Its nominal power of 2200 W can be fed to the grid over the whole input voltage range of 250 to 600 V due to a maximum current of 11 A . The Sunny Boy 2500's maximum efficiency of 94 % is even higher than that of the smaller transformer-based devices of the Sunny Boy Family.

The variable DC input range and the possibility to connect up to three strings with the reliable Multi-Contact connectors make any module configuration possible. These features enable the operator to freely design and implement personal needs for the solar system. However, the optimal configuration is a solar generator with an output of 2750 to 3450 W.

For over 15 years SMA has been developing and producing inverters for grid feeding of solar energy in its Solar Technology business unit. Today the company has gained experience of a total of more than 60 MW_AC of PV inverter power installed.

While formerly central inverters were used whose power was specifically adjusted to the PV panel (a few kW up to 500 kW) SMA has revolutionized PV system technology by introducing the String Technology.

With the String Inverters of the Sunny Boy product range (700/850/1100E/2000/2500/3000) PV plants from a few hundred watts up to several MW can be built.

For the String Technology only a few PV modules are switched in series to form one string which is connected to the Sunny Boy which in turn feeds the PV power to the grid. Costly PV junction boxes on the DC side are no longer required.

The Sunny Boy String Inverter can simply be connected to any point in the 230 V house distribution network.

Cabling on the DC side is minimized and the total yield of the PV plant maximized by local MPP tracking.

Large-scale plants can be built easily and modularly by multiplying the identical strings. This drastically simplifies planning for PV plants no matter how much power they have.

An adjusted measurement acquisition and diagnosis system is based on the available Powerline for data transfer between the Sunny Boys and a service PC.

Thus the String Technology developed by SMA in cooperation with Institut für Solare Energieversorgungstechnik (ISET, Institute for Solar Power Technology) has considerably reduced system costs while increasing the PV yield.
